The Little Big Day Out is coming to Alexandra.

The concert, on December 12, will showcase the musical talent in the Alexandra area, event organiser Alan Whitaker says.

Any profits from the day will be donated to the charity programme Food For Thought, which is run by the Social Opportunity Group, founded by Mr Whitaker's son Ben.

Formerly of Alexandra but now based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ben Whitaker runs the project, which aims to provide support for disadvantaged children in Gonett, Buenos Aires, feeding and educating them.

In an interview with the Otago Daily Times last year, Ben said the project had become his ''life's passion'' and he was affected by the conditions in the city and motivated to improve the lives of those living there.

He said Food For Thought was trying to break a cycle.

A lack of education through generations meant the children could not make informed decisions for themselves.

The meal provided by the charity was possibly the one healthy meal the children received that day, he said.

The Alexandra concert would be a ''non-stop family picnic-style music festival, from noon through until 8pm,'' his father said.

''We're hoping people will come along with their picnic chairs and lunch or tea, or they can buy food at the concert.''

Centennial Park, the former swimming pool site, was an ideal venue for the show, Mr Whitaker said.

''It's absolutely perfect as it's just the right size and it's a natural amphitheatre.''

Dunstan High School pupils are running the concert and the school choir is involved, along with the Alexandra Ukulele orchestra and other Alexandra school pupils in solos, duos and bands.

Other bands from the area will play and there will be a variety of singers, musicians and dancers.
