The Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board has welcomed a new member.

Lawrence woman Rochelle Langley was sworn in yesterday.

She replaces Brent Taylor, who resigned at the end of last year because he was leaving the area.

Mrs Langley and Paul Tansley were tied as the next highest-polling candidates from the 2013 election, after Mr Taylor.

The decision as to who would take the position came down to drawing a name from a hat, an item in a recent board agenda said.

Mrs Langley, who served on the community board in 2009, told the Otago Daily Times she hoped to make the best decisions and do what was right for the area.

Lawrence was a great community, she said.

Her previous experience gave her an advantage on what to expect in the role.

‘‘It's just a case of catching up on where everything is at.''

Mrs Langley, an active volunteer with the Lawrence Fire Brigade, works at the Lawrence Night 'N Day store.

Clutha district councillor for Lawrence Geoff Blackmore expressed his confidence in Mrs Langley's aptitude for the position.

He said she was well aware of how the community board worked.‘‘She'll slot in reasonably quickly.''Mrs Langley attended her first community board meeting yesterday.
