Kris Bennett says being a pillion passenger is the perfect way to see the countryside.

The Dunedin woman (pictured left) was one of hundreds of people making a beeline for the 32nd annual Vincent County rally at Galloway, near Alexandra, yesterday.

"It's my first rally and I'm really excited about it - I feel like I'm 18 again. I've discovered, at the age of 57, that I love being on the back of a motorbike and I was lucky enough to be offered a trip to this rally.''

Ms Bennett said she had no desire to "graduate'' to owning her own motorbike and preferred to be the passenger.

"Being in charge of a bike is much too active for me ... as the passenger you can just concentrate on the trip, the sense of freedom and all the scents; it's just fantastic.''

The setting for the Vincent rally - farmland near the Manuherikia River - was "incredibly beautiful'', she said.

The rally was organised by Bikers Rights of New Zealand Otago.

President Phil Scorringe, of Dunedin, hoped about 1500 people would take part in the weekend event.

"This is very much a family-oriented event, where people can just chill out,'' he said.

Bands would perform last night and tonight. For the first time, a mechanical bucking bronco would be part of the entertainment, from 2pm to 6pm today.

Proceeds would go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust.
