Police have released the name of the man killed in a hunting incident on the Old Woman Range near Cromwell.
He was Gary John Tall (61), from Cromwell.
Mr Tall had been hunting with a friend yesterday when the incident occurred.
Police were investigating a shooting but did not believe the incident was suspicious.
Initial indications were that Mr Tall was alone and his weapon discharged accidentally, striking him in the abdomen area, police said.
Mr Tall's family and hunting companion had been referred to Victim Support and police were in the process of organising a Karakia to take place once the scene has been examined.
The Coroner had been advised, and a post mortem examination was to be conducted in Dunedin today.
