Otago Polytechnic has announced plans for a central hub in Bannockburn, combining its three Central Otago sites.

The tertiary institution purchased the 9ha "Bannockburn Block" at 25 Bannockburn Road, which it previously leased from Contact Energy.

Polytech chief executive Phil Ker said the hub was "on our wish list for a very long time".

Otago Polytechnic Central campus is presently housed across three sites: Molyneux Avenue in Old Cromwell, the Otago Secondary Tertiary College in the industrial area, and the Bannockburn Rd facility.

"These have all met their purpose, but to combine them all into one campus will allow us to create a real learning destination," Mr Ker said.

Programmes in horticulture, viticulture, sports turf, and stonemasonry are currently situated in the Bannockburn Block, which comprises three buildings: a cherry orchard, vineyards, a golf driving range and sports turf training facilities.

"Plans for the re-development of the campus include building a purpose-built facility which will ensure we continue to offer true experiential learning at a destination where we can incorporate our programmes and expand on our sustainable practices," Mr Ker said.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone with programme ideas, or who may want to be involved commercially, or who may have ideas for new initiatives for the Bannockburn Block."

Otago Polytechnic Central Campus marketing co-ordinator Melanie Kees said the development was an "amazing opportunity".

"This is a very exciting time for Central Campus. Cromwell is the heart of Central Otago, and we plan to be the heart of learning in Otago's heartland."
