WoolOn reorganising

People to steer WoolOn as a solo event will be rounded up into a mob at a meeting in Alexandra tonight.

The first meeting of the WoolOn Creative Fashion Event Society Incorporated will be held at Centennial Court at 7pm.

A committee will be elected and the constitution of the new entity discussed.

In February, the Alexandra Blossom Festival committee decided it was time for the woollen fashion showcase to go it alone.

WoolOn started 13 years ago, as part of the New Zealand Merino Shears, to publicise the use of wool in fashion.

It became part of the Blossom Festival festival programme 10 years ago.

Festival chairwoman Clair Higginson said the incorporated society would run WoolOn.

‘‘I hope to get a diverse group of people at the meeting, people from all backgrounds, to form the committee.''

The event is usually staged in October but no decision has been made about this year's show.

‘‘One of the first things the new committee will do is have a serious discussion about the timing, venue and format of WoolOn,'' Ms Higginson said.

‘‘This is the chance for WoolOn to forge a strong identity separate from the Blossom Festival.''

More than 60 designers entered the contest last year. There were nine categories, with $10,000 in prizemoney.

In recent years, audiences have had two chances to view the WoolOn entries - a catwalk show on a Friday night, followed by a gala show on the Saturday night.

Prize-winners are announced at the Saturday show.
