Reserve land sale deferred

The sale of reserve land near Clyde is on hold until at least November.

Last year, the Department of Conservation considered selling 47ha of land it owns above State Highway 8, opposite the town, which is part of the Clyde Recreation Reserve.

The land was managed by the Central Otago District Council until 2002, but formally came under Doc control in 2014.

Doc received four submissions, all opposing the move to revoke the land's reserve status.

Statutory land management adviser Dinah Wakelin said the department had permission to remove the reserve status, but was waiting until the council decided whether it would use the land for a proposed alternative Alexandra water supply project.

"We have no plans to dispose of it at this time.''

The land had little conservation value, she said.

Council infrastructure services executive manager Julie Muir said it requested for Doc to retain the land until options for the project were explored.

"We just need to see where the pipe will go. After that, the land could probably still be sold.''

Various options and configurations were being considered, she said.

The council would probably have a preferred outline design in November, she said.

"Once the preferred design has been confirmed then we will revisit the request to the Department of Conservation to retain this piece of land.''

If sold, it will be offered first to Ngai Tahu.
