The traditional "grudge match'' between Ranfurly and Oturehua ice hockey teams was one of the highlights of the revelry marking the Maniototo Ice Rink's 25th anniversary.

Players ranged in age from their teens to their 70s and the battle ended in a 6-all draw.

Maniototo Ice Rink chairman Jock Scott said the match was revived for the occasion - "it was always a bit of a grudge match, over the years''.

The outdoor rink in Naseby is used for skating and curling as well as ice hockey.

Mr Scott was pleased with the success of the weekend and said the ice was "as good as it's ever been''.

About 120 people attended a Highland ball on Saturday night and about 60 took part in the jubilee dinner on Friday night.

The rink was the venue for the rest of the celebrations, including curling, skating and ice hockey.

Mr Scott has been involved with the facility since its inception and Owen Hunter, of Fairlie, who was one of the original drivers of the rink, also took part in the anniversary celebrations.

The first meeting to gauge support for a rink was called by the Ranfurly Ice Hockey Club and Naseby Ice-skating Club. Work started in 1988 at what was known as Andy Brown's dam site, on Channel Rd, Naseby.

It opened three years later and remains there, although many upgrades have taken place.

The complex is now part of a wider focus on ice sports. The Maniototo Curling International Rink - an indoor curling facility - and the Naseby Luge and snow park are next door to the ice rink.

"The whole thing has gone from strength to strength and we have a pretty impressive ice sports centre here. It can only get better when it's utilised to its full potential, with more additions planned like the summer luge and even hot tubs and all sorts,'' Mr Scott said.
