Bones,fat upset park users

A mess of animal bones and fat has been dumped at Maniototo Park several times recently, which is disturbing for park users, district council staff say.

Central Otago District Council parks and recreation manager Mat Begg it appeared the mess was left by someone feeding their dogs near a water trough in the Ranfurly park.

"It seems as if they've run their dogs there and then decided ... to feed the dogs there, as well.

"Perhaps they've had a load of bones on their truck and threw some off for the dogs.''

Bones and fat were left littering the site, which was unpleasant for other park users, he said.

"It's probably someone local. It's happened a couple of times now and, of course, we want to stop it happening again. It's a completely inappropriate thing to do in the park.

"People need to show some consideration for other park users. It's not only illegal to dump stuff like this in our reserves, there's also a safety concern for people who use this space for walking, for sport or for family gatherings.''

The council wanted members of the community to keep an eye out and report any sightings of illegal dumping, Mr Begg said.
