A highway in the South is likely to remain closed overnight on Sunday due to a major and unstable slip.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says the slip near Boundary Creek, between Makarora and the Neck of Lake Wanaka on State Highway 6, happened early on Sunday morning and covers both lanes.

NZTA's Senior network manager, Otago, John Jarvis said the road was unlikely to open until at least 10am on Monday.

"There is an unknown amount of unstable material being assessed by engineers above the slip.

"Trucks and loaders are being sent to the site and clearance work will be undertaken to clear it as soon as it is safe to do so."

Motorists should check the NZTA website for any updates, Mr Jarvis said.
