The East Otago Health Trust is almost halfway towards its target of raising $1million for a new medical centre in Palmerston.

East Otago Health Trust president Mary O'Connell, of Meadowbank, said more than $445,000 had been raised so far.

Many East Otago people had given or pledged money towards the new Palmerston health centre, which would provide services for all the East Otago area in conjunction with a smaller medical centre in Waikouaiti.

Surgeries for doctors and space for a physiotherapist and district nurses will be provided in the Palmerston centre, as well as administration and waiting space.

It was hoped fundraising would be completed by the end of this year, Mrs O'Connell said recently.

Construction of the new centre, in front of the present centre in District Rd, Palmerston, will probably take another year.

Further donations from Palmerston and East Otago residents would still be welcome, Mrs O'Connell said.

Donations may be left at the Palmerston Medical Centre or at the Waihemo Pharmacy in Palmerston, she said.
