The Ngai Tahu Maori Rock Art Trust is awaiting a report from a geological engineer who has inspected the Takiroa rock art site, near Duntroon.

The site, a popular tourist stop next to State Highway 83, has been closed since the collapse of a rock outcrop, after heavy rain, in May.

Rare examples of Maori rock art survived the collapse.

The engineer, who visited the site last Friday, was assessing the stability of the site, trust curator Amanda Symon said.

The trust would make a decision on what the next step would be, once the report was received.
