Weapons recovered after brawl

A fight on a north Oamaru street on Saturday morning developed into a brawl.

Weapons including a large hunting knife, slasher and fence palings with nails sticking out, later recovered by police.

Yesterday, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said it was very lucky no-one was seriously injured "or worse".

Such an incident had the potential to get "really ugly, really quickly", especially with the types of weapons involved.

The fracas, along almost the length of Witham St, followed a party at a property in the street.

The incident involved between 10 and 15 people aged between 16 and 24, all from Oamaru.

Police, who were "quite disgusted" by the incident, were still trying to talk to all involved and establish what happened.

When police arrived about 1am, people scattered and disappeared.

An intoxicated young woman was taken to Oamaru Hospital to be checked after possibly being hit by a car.

It had still not been established if she had been, Sgt Woodbridge said.

Alcohol was a major factor and just about all involved were intoxicated.

The weapons were found along the street.

Police would be speaking to all those involved before deciding if charges would be laid and against whom, he said.
