Omarama's 2.4m guitar.
Omarama has its own giant guitar, 2.4m high, in the
centre of town at the intersection of State Highways 83 and 8.
It has been put up to publicise the Countrytime Hoedown, the
first time Omarama has hosted the event after it became too
big to be accommodated at Otematata.
The hoedown, from November 19 to 21, has been backed by
Omarama businesses with between 600 and 700 people expected
to hear more than 100 performers including several top
recording artists.
Organised by Ferg Mitchell, the hoedown started as a small
event at the Hakataramea Hotel, moved to Otematata when that
hotel closed, and is now at Omarama.
The Countrytime Hotel, with its large grounds, would be able
to better accommodate the event, particularly the South
Canterbury Motorhome Rally which will be part of the hoedown.
Already, the hotel is fully booked and other accommodation in
the town, including in holiday homes whose owners are
prepared to rent, is filling up.
