Two stalwarts of the Waitaki branch of Save the Children - who joined the same day - have received national recognition.

Anne Wilkinson, who has been president of the branch for more than 20 years, received the distinguished service award at the organisation's recent annual conference in Wellington.

Shirley Compton, who is the branch's vice-president, treasurer and manager of its Thames St shop, received a long-service award.

The nomination form said Mrs Wilkinson's name was "synonymous" with Save the Children in the area and her dedication, commitment and ability kept it to the forefront of the community.

She seized "every opportunity" to promote the organisation.

Described as unflappable, dependable, and always willing to work for Save the Children, Mrs Compton was a tireless and dedicated worker who brought "a quiet capability" to the branch.

She participated in all fundraising activities and, with her influence, the shop had flourished.

Yesterday, both women said they had enjoyed working together and being involved in the organisation.

"It doesn't always seem like work ...

"Where other people go to golf, I come down here to the shop," Mrs Compton said.
