Penny-farthing tour begins

The pennies are going on parade. The penny-farthing tour leaves Kaiapoi today, arriving in Oamaru on Wednesday in time for the opening of the town's annual Victorian heritage celebrations.

The tour, which has attracted 25 riders including two from Canada, will be farewelled by members of the Kaiapoi Heritage Group.

They will stay overnight in Oxford, heading to Ashburton tomorrow, via the Deans family's Homebush Stables and Museum where there is an open day.

On Monday, the tour heads to Timaru, using the inland route, and visiting pupils at Netherby and Carew-Peel Forest schools.

There will be a visit to Timaru South School on Tuesday and the riders will head towards Waimate, via Blue Cliffs Station.

They will visit Waimate Centennial School on Wednesday before cycling to the Oamaru race-course.

There were many new riders this year, one of the organisers, Wendy Simpson, said.
