When John Chynoweth and Sharon Chambers cruised into Oamaru yesterday afternoon in their gleaming 1918 Buick car, it was hard to believe it used to be "a heap of parts".

The Oamaru couple, appropriately clad in period costume, were taking part in the recreation of a 1910 reliability trial from Christchurch to Dunedin.

The centennial run, organised by the North Otago branch of the Vintage Car Club, started from Christchurch yesterday morning.

Mr Chynoweth, who is South Island club captain of the Vintage Car Club, acquired the parts about six or seven years ago.

"It was just a trailer load of spread-out parts," he recalled.

He did the paint, panel and mechanical work, while Ms Chambers did the upholstery. It was finished about six weeks ago, the reliability trial being an incentive to get it completed.

"I wanted to get it done for this. It's a special event," he said.

The trip from Christchurch got off to a bad start when they got a puncture in the first three or four kilometres, but the rest of journey went smoothly.

Mr Chynoweth's next project is the restoration of a rare Australian-made 1924 Summit car which is also "in bits".

• Garry Corner cut quite a dash in his Union Jack T-shirt and cap yesterday.

Mr Corner, from Christchurch, was among a group of Jowett car enthusiasts taking part in a rally to Oamaru. Participants came from as far afield as Nelson and Invercargill.

About 20 vehicles were on display in Harbour St yesterday morning, before heading to visit Clarks Mill and the North Otago Vintage Machinery Club at Reidston.

Mr Corner was driving a 1952 Jowett Javelin, which he has owned about 12 years. He has been involved with Jowetts for about 24 years.
