Dansey Pass trail ride roars into life

The North Otago hills were alive with the sound of almost 1000 motorcycles on Saturday as Australasia's largest one-day trail ride roared into life.

The annual Dansey Pass motorcycle trail ride, a major fundraiser for Duntroon School, attracted 956 riders.

The event, based at Maerewhenua, near Duntroon, has developed into the largest one-day trail ride in New Zealand and Australia.

Four separate tracks covered about 160km.

The testing trails took their toll on rider and machine - 15 riders were treated by St John personnel, with three men taken by ambulance to Oamaru Hospital with minor injuries and another man flown to Dunedin Hospital, by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter, with moderate injuries.

Funds raised from this year's event will be used to upgrade the swimming pool.
