Cucumber sandwiches had to be on the menu at the Victorian garden party in the Oamaru Public Gardens yesterday.

Members of the Waitaki branch of Save the Children prepared an elegant afternoon tea which included sandwiches, creamed scones and orange cake. Tea was served from silver teapots.

Visitors from Hawkes Bay, Judy and Colin Barnes, turned up on their bicycles, having taken part in the cycle tour from Kaiapoi to Oamaru earlier in the week.

Members of the Loyal Haumoana Cycle Club - "we have a membership of two and a 100% turnout to this event" - it was the second year they had attended Oamaru's Victorian heritage celebrations and they thought it was "just amazing", Mrs Barnes said.

"We love heritage, we love vintage. The people are amazing, they are welcoming ... what else can you say?" she said.

Bustles rustled and top hats were doffed as ladies and gentlemen in Victorian costume strolled around the streets of Oamaru yesterday.

Celebrations co-ordinator Irene Sparks was thrilled with how many people were "getting into the spirit" and dressing in period costume.

Spit 'N Polish was the winner of the best heritage window display.

The celebrations continue today with a street parade at 11.30am, a trolley derby and the 16th national penny-farthing and veteran cycle championships.

The event will conclude tomorrow with the Victorian fete in Harbour and Tyne Sts, which includes street circus, the world stone-sawing championships and stalls.
