Victorian fete fitting finale

Oamaru turned back the clock yesterday for the town's annual Victorian fete, marking the end of Victorian heritage celebrations.

The historic stone buildings were filled with people, stalls, fragrances and colour.

Fete organiser Faye Ormandy was "rapt" with the response, with about 130 stallholders selling everything from pumpkin plants to jewellery.

Heather Berger, from Tapanui, and her children Rowan (5), Aylwen (6) and Aidan (7) were a drawcard for photographers.

They were dressed in Victorian costume and selling chicken coops.

The chooks on display were having a big weekend.

They had been at the West Otago A and P Show the day before.

There was a street circus and a Punch and Judy show.

Oamaru's Queen of Victorian Oamaru, Julie Walker, added a regal touch.

Saturday dawned damp and overcast for the grand street parade and national penny-farthing and veteran cycle championships, but people still enjoyed themselves, celebrations co-ordinator Irene Sparks said.
