Rodeo still on; races not

The Omarama rodeo will now be held on New Year's Day.

The popular event, which was to have been held on Tuesday, was postponed due to heavy rain.

While local farmers welcomed the downpour, Omarama Rodeo Club president Neil Burnett decided to postpone the event for the safety of competitors and the stock.

It was only the third time in the past 24 years that the rodeo has had to be postponed.

The event is a major drawcard for holidaymakers in the area.

The rodeo will be held at Buscot Station, where a hill above the arena provides excellent viewing.

The Hawea Horse Races will not be held this year, after organisers decided to cancel Tuesday's washed-out event instead of moving it to a future date.

The Hawea Picnic Races are an annual tradition that has proved popular with Upper Clutha festive holidaymakers.

The heavy rain that soaked the region on Monday and Tuesday shut down the the Hawea Domain course on Tuesday.

Upcoming country events during a busy South Island racing calendar meant that re-scheduling the event to yesterday would have been impractical, especially given the wet trackside conditions, a spokesman for the Hawea Racing Club said.
