Norovirus likely cause

Cases of gastroenteritis are continuing to be reported in Oamaru.

Yesterday, Public Health South's medical officer of health, Marion Poore, said the symptoms suggested it was caused by norovirus, as both adults and children had been affected, but that was yet to be confirmed by laboratory testing.

About 60 cases of norovirus in the Oamaru area were reported to Public Health South last month and there had since been about a further 20 cases, in the past few days, Dr Poore said.

Symptoms of norovirus include projectile vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever.

People were reminded of the importance of good hygiene, including frequent and thorough hand washing and drying.

If sick, they should stay home from school or work until free of symptoms for 48 hours.
