Psst ... did you know the "judges" from American Idol are coming to the Plunket Electrical North Otago A and P Show tomorrow night?

It might be Oamaru's best kept secret but apparently some of the biggest names in show business will be officiating at the McKenzie Craik Wearable Parts contest.

Wearable Parts - a new event on the show's entertainment programme - is the brainchild of North Otago A and P Association committee members Richard Strowger and Bryce Burnett.

It follows last year's successful Miss Show Sheila drag queen contest, which raised about $1500 for the Cancer Society.

This year's contest will raise money for North Otago Search and Rescue.

The four contestants involved - Gerard McCarthy (Horn Dog Hook Me Up), from PGG Wrightson, Mark Rawson (Mark the Dark Spark), from Plunket Electrical, Waitaki district councillor Kevin Malcolm (Honey Park It Up) and Mike Hurley (Sasha Silver Thong), from Central South Island Helicopters - have been rehearsing for two and-a-half months.

While Mr Strowger confirmed there would be individual acts and a combined medley, details of the acts and the costumes were a closely-guarded secret.

Television personality Te Radar will compere the show and last year's Miss Show Sheila winner, Ross Lory, will present a new trophy to the winner.

The contest will be held in front of the grandstand at 7.30pm.

On Saturday, there will be several other new events at the show, including a bachelor bake-off, which will be judged by Bevan Smith, of Riverstone Kitchen, and a hay-baling demonstration by North Otago Ditching and Baling.
