Police hail decency of man's act

The actions of a man who dropped strangers' bags into the Oamaru Police Station yesterday, after Christchurch's devastating earthquake, "reinforces the decency of human nature", police said.

The man, who left the city after the earthquake, called into the station yesterday morning with some bags he had found on a city street.

Police found they belonged to Thai restaurant owner Song Ung and friend Kay Luksanacheth, who immediately travelled to Oamaru to collect them.

Detective Sergeant Mike Ryder said Oamaru police wanted to acknowledge "small acts of kindness like this that arise from the most horrific of circumstances".

"It reinforces the decency of human nature when we all look out for each other in this way," Det Sgt Ryder said.
