The development of more cycling and walking tracks is being sought by the Oamaru Multisport Club.

Spokeswoman Adair Craik said the club intended making a submission to the Waitaki District Council's draft annual plan.

There were some "fantastic areas" waiting to be developed in Oamaru, including the Glen Warren, Glen Eden and Reservoir Rd reserves.

The timing was ideal because trees were being felled in some of those areas and, during the replanting stage, it could be ensured they were suitable for recreational opportunities, she said They would also be safe areas, without the worry of vehicles, Ms Craik said.

People were recognising the economic benefits to the community of having such attractions.

"We have to think about our future. We have to make this a very cool place to live."

The club also wanted to see the development of the skateboard park continued and a cycle lane from the historic precinct to the cycle track at Orwell St, with a view to extending it in the future to the freezing works at Pukeuri.

The possibility of employing a community development officer, who could drive the projects, should also be explored, Ms Craik said.

The club's suggestions linked in with the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail from Aoraki/Mt Cook to Oamaru.

"All we're doing is creating more arteries that go off Alps 2 Ocean."

The potential of the Alps 2 Ocean project was "massive" and the community needed to embrace it and encourage people to spend time in Oamaru.
