Campaigner 'appalled' at removal of chapel items

Susie Scott, who has campaigned for the retention of the altar in the Teschemakers Chapel, says she is "appalled" other items have been removed from the chapel.

When contacted yesterday, Fr Mark Chamberlain, of Holy Name Parish in Dunedin, confirmed objects including the statues of Our Lady of St Joseph and St Dominic, choir stalls and some stands had been removed from the chapel.

That happened with the agreement of the respective legal parties involved. Some of the items would be installed in Holy Name Church and other objects would help other church communities in Otago, he said.

The row over the altar is heading back to the Environment Court after mediation between Fr Mark, who wants it moved to Holy Name Church, and Ms Scott, who wants it retained in the chapel, was called off.

The altar was to have been removed last August and transferred to Holy Name Church. Ms Scott successfully applied for an interim enforcement order from the court, which meant work could not start and resource consent must be obtained from the Waitaki District Council. Fr Chamberlain then filed an application to set aside the order.

The altar was given to the parish by the Dominican Sisters, who own the contents of the chapel.

Ms Scott said she was appalled the items were being removed before the altar issue had been settled in court.

She had not received notification of a date for a court hearing.
