The idea of having a town crier welcoming Seasider train
passengers to Palmerston and steering them to tourist
attractions will be put to the Palmerston Gateway to Gold
promotion group.
Waitaki District councillor Kathy Dennison said the promotion
group could be asked to fund the town crier position for
three months, with local businesses asked to continue funding
the position after that.
The town crier could be dressed in traditional garb. He or
she would have the task of welcoming passengers on the trains
to Palmerston. The town crier could direct passengers to
Palmerston shops and visitor attractions as well as to the
many tour buses which took visitors from Palmerston to the
OceanaGold mine at Macraes and to Mt Cook and Christchurch.
A trial period has been suggested for the position.
