Two callouts for SAR

Search and rescue teams were called to two separate events in North Otago on Wednesday night.

In the first, a musterer at the Huxley Gorge Station near Ohau ran into difficulty as he tried to ford a flooded river in a vehicle about 1.30pm.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said the man was extricated by an emergency helicopter from Central South Island Helicopters Ltd about 4pm.

The man suffered mild hypothermia but was otherwise unhurt.

Then just before 4.30pm on Wednesday, search and rescue personnel were called to Oamaru Harbour by the activation of an emergency locator beacon at an unknown location in the harbour.

Two helicopters were used to search for the source of the beacon signal.

It was discovered yesterday morning the emergency locator beacon signal was coming from a vessel moored in the harbour, and it was subsequently switched off.
