Day in Oamaru last Saturday. Photo by David Bruce.
Four-year-old Abby Hayes loves Land Rovers, and she has
one of her own to prove it.
The one-third scale model pedal Land Rover Series 1 was at
the All British Car Day in Oamaru on Saturday, parked with
her father Ross' 1954 Series 1.
Abby was sporting three Land Rover badges on her outfit as
she, Mr Hayes and mother Ailsa, along with participants in
about 60 other cars, set out on a tour of North Otago as part
of the day.
Mr Hayes started building Abby's pint-sized Land Rover when
she was 1 year old, to have it ready in time for her fourth
birthday in October last year.
He measured up his own Series 1, then scaled it down to
one-third.
Like all Land Rovers, the pedal car is built from aluminium.
It also has working lights and a winch.
Asked if Abby liked Land Rovers, Mr Hayes replied: "Hell,
yes."
So does he. He bought his Series 1 in 1996 and it took about
five years to restore.
He has another Series 1 "as a future project" waiting to be
rebuilt and also owns a Series 3.
