A campaign to bring a world-class neurosurgery research and teaching centre to Dunedin, closing in on its $3 million target after a flood of contributions this week, has been further aided by three donations from Oamaru.
The Neurological Foundation Chair of Neurosurgery Campaign hopes to establish the Neurological Foundation Chair of Neurosurgery and the country's first academic neurosurgery unit at the University of Otago.
Appeal project manager Irene Mosley said the appeal had raised $2,320,947.10, following a host of donations from Southland and additional donations from the Rotary Club of Oamaru, Oamaru Altrusa and the Oamaru Tuesday Patchers and Quilters.
Donations were rolling in daily and many individuals and organisations were doing "a great job", she said.
Appeal envelopes which went out to Southland on June 4, have reaped $20,000, and this week three organisations in North Otago have contributed more than $8000.
"Oamaru Rotary are donating the proceeds from the book sale last month, which apparently went extremely well and raised $5000 for us. Oamaru Altrusa has sent us a cheque for $2000.
"The Oamaru Patchers and Quilters, which is a group of seven ladies who have been meeting on Tuesday afternoons for over 20 years, to make quilts for charity. They made a quilt, cushion and table runner which they raffled for us last month, raising $1055."
Patcher and quilter Dawn Murphy said she was delighted that the quilt raffled off had raised a good amount.
"It took probably six months to make, because a lot of it is done by hand."
