Job losses unlikely

It was unlikely there would be redundancies after the closure of the New Zealand Credit Union South (NZCUS) credit agency branch in Palmerston, the Waitaki District Council said yesterday.

The NZCUS facility, which is housed in the council's Tiverton St building and staffed by four council employees, is due to close at the end of November, but council corporate services group manager Carolyn Carter said although it could not be confirmed yet, it was unlikely the branch's closure would have any major effect on staffing levels.

"We would most likely be transferring one of our staff members from there to a vacant position that is currently in Oamaru. Then we haven't yet finalised any determination as to whether it is going to affect the hours of the other staff, but the most likely scenario is very little, if at all.

"They are only doing a small proportion of their work for NZCUS, so it only affects a small amount of their workload."
