Community recognition and some commercial assistance has been
given to Waihemo Wastebusters, the Palmerston-based recycling
group, which is in its fourth year of operation.
Waihemo Wastebusters chairman Dr Pat Shannon said support had
come from the Waihemo Community Board, Oceana Gold and many
of their contractors, Oceana Gold funding allowing for, among
others, volunteers and an administrator to be paid.
Fifty-five householders in the Palmerston-Waihemo area now
recycle using the kerb collection service, Oceana Gold and
many of their contractors also recycling their waste and the
Palmerston rubbish bins contractor diverting recyclable
material to Waihemo Wastebusters.
This meant Waihemo Wastebusters and the Palmerston-Waihemo
community were now diverting about two tonnes of materials a
year that would otherwise go to the Palmerston landfill, Dr
Shannon said.
