The Waitaki Recreation Centre has reported an improvement in
its finances.
The centre, which is operated by the Waitaki District Council
and is home to North Otago Basketball, bounced back from a
operating loss of $4731 in the 2011 financial year, and this
week announced that it had made an operating surplus of $3103
for the latest financial year (ended June 30, 2012).
Recreation centre manager Louise Fangupo said the year had
been ''challenging but successful''.
Ms Fangupo said the centre had received funding from the
council to allow it to continue to operate for another year.
''Had this been unsuccessful, the district would have been
left without an indoor sports facility, and in the case of
some groups, with no alternative venue in which to continue
their activities.''
The centre was also awarded $3385 of grants from Youthtown
and Dean Law over the past year.
The centre planned to upgrade its facilities over the next
three years, Ms Fangupo said.
''We are hoping to get some local business sponsors aboard,
apply to trust funds ... develop some new programmes, and
work more closely with ... businesses and organisations, such
as the Waitaki Aquatic Centre and Sport Waitaki.''
