Just a week after receiving confirmation that Oamaru
Airport could be used to host drag races, the Whitestone
Rodders club has already pencilled in a date for Oamaru's first
official quarter mile race in 12 years.
Club member Kev Boler said he was ''over the moon'' that the
Waitaki District Council had approved the airport as a venue,
and a drag race had already been organised for March 16.
Mr Boler said 48 members of the rodders club would take part,
but there was room for 120 cars.
The event was open to anyone with their own car, a warrant of
fitness and a driver's licence.
''We really want to encourage the young guys with their
Japanese cars to take part, so we can give them somewhere to
race that is not on the street,'' he said.
He said it had been 12 years since drag races at the airport
were stopped, due to regular commercial flights using the
tarmac runway.
