Two trampers were found safe and well by a rescue helicopter
yesterday, after they were reported to be four days overdue
returning from a tramp in hill country near Ohau.
A helicopter from Mt Cook was launched after police in Twizel
received a call reporting a 40-year-old man and his
37-year-old partner had not returned from a trek around the
South Temple Valley.
Detective Warren Duncan, of Oamaru, said the pair's vehicle
was located in the South Temple car park on Thursday
afternoon and a rescue helicopter quickly located the couple
yesterday.
''They walked out with no injuries and in good spirits. They
had just been waiting for the weather to clear and the river
to come down.
''The helicopter found them and gave them a lift back to the
car, basically.''
The search was over within 40 minutes, Det Duncan said.
''Luckily, they were in a clearing when the helicopter found
them, and they were able to land and pick them up.''
