Police are looking for the driver of a car allegedly seen
speeding through Oamaru in thick fog yesterday morning, after
the car skidded and came close to hitting a baby in nearby
Weston.
Detective Kevin Kirkman said a red hatchback was seen
speeding along Chelmer St towards Weston at between 7.15am
and 9.15am, before it was again seen speeding in Weston,
where it was involved in a near-miss with a pedestrian
carrying a baby. He said police wanted to hear from anyone
who saw the car.
''There was thick fog at the time, making driving conditions
challenging. At approximately 9.10am, a car matching the same
description was speeding in the West View Dr area at Weston.
The car skidded and almost hit a pedestrian who was walking
in the area. ''The pedestrian was a member of the public who
was carrying a baby.''
Det Kirkman said anyone with information on the car or who
witnessed it being driven should contact Oamaru police on 03
433-1418.
