A date in June has been set for the trial in the Timaru
District Court of a 40-year-old man on charges relating to
the crash in 2011 which killed Timaru financier Allan
Hubbard.
Andrew John Earl (40), of Milton, has pleaded not guilty to
charges of careless driving causing the death of Mr Hubbard
(83) and careless driving causing injury to Mr Hubbard's
wife, Jean (then 82), on State Highway 1, at Hilderthorpe,
near Oamaru, on September 2, 2011.
The trial was initially set to start on December 3 last year,
but in November police sought an adjournment to allow for
further investigations and because a witness was not
available on the trial dates. A new date was to be set in the
Oamaru District Court today but this has been handled by a
registrar's adjournment.
The trial will now start in Timaru on June 4 and is expected
to last three days. It will be before a Christchurch judge,
who is yet to be appointed.
