After four years of hard work, Omarama residents can now see physical progress on the project to turn their memorial hall into a community centre.

Amalgamated Builders from Queenstown this week is laying concrete for one of the extensions to the hall (right) and removing windows to create a gymnasium area and doctor's room in the west wing.

A concrete floor for a large extension to the rear of the hall (left) has also been laid.

The project was first raised at a public meeting in 2009 and, since then, the community has been raising the $730,000 needed.

The upgraded community centre will include a gymnasium and a 50sq m extension to house a Plunket and meeting room, and a medical consultation facility. It will have broadband internet and a library and provide a headquarters in civil defence emergencies. The kitchen will be moved, plumbing, windows and wiring upgraded and the building relined.
