Organisers say there was a large increase in the number of drivers taking part in yesterday's Ngapara hill climb, the 50th running of the event.

Last year, 28 drivers took part in the hill climb on Ngapara-Georgetown Rd (formerly Coal pit Rd), but event organiser Peter Fridd said this year's event had attracted 40 drivers.

The event had also attracted ''quite a few'' younger drivers, as well as at least three ''new faces'' from Oamaru, who tackled the 1.4km hill course, Mr Fridd said.

The event had been run intermittently since it started in the 1950s, and Mr Fridd said he was pleased with the increase in the number of competitors.

''We are growing more popular. Every year we seem to get a few more.''

A ''wide range'' of cars was entered this year in both the vintage car and modern car sections. Entries ranged from a Porsche to a 1929 Chrysler Special.

Duncan McCrostie set an event record to win with a time of 50.68sec, in his Mitsubishi Evo. David Harris won the vintage section with a time of 1min 6sec, in his Formula Ford.
