Peter Bond, Patricia McKeown and Doreen Cleave were sworn in by Judge Joanne Maze during a court sitting at the Oamaru Opera House on Wednesday.
Judge Maze said there was a ''great deal of responsibility'' in being a justice of the peace, a role which was important to the community and to the justice system.
''Together, we are a significant part of the engine room of New Zealand.''
North Otago Justices of the Peace president Anne Hore said the new JPs had gone through a long process before appointment.
