Budget service desperate for volunteers

The North Otago Budget Advisory Service is appealing for volunteers after losing four over the past year.

North Otago Budget Advisory Service co-ordinator Marge Giles said about three new volunteers were needed to handle North Otago's relatively high level of demand for the service, but nobody had come forward yet.

In the past, a new volunteer would be trained so as to replace an outgoing one, but this time four volunteers had left and there were no replacements, she said.

The service had advertised for volunteers since early September, but nobody had come forward so far, Mrs Giles said.

''We've never had this happen before.

''It is very frustrating not being able to get volunteers . . . it puts a big workload on me,'' she said.

Anyone interested in volunteering could come in to talk about getting involved, Mrs Giles said.

Volunteers had ''to be accepting of all people and be a good listener'', as well as having maths and writing skills, she said.

Volunteers would be taught about budgeting as part of their training, Mrs Giles said.
