Two of the three warships deployed off the Oamaru coast as part of the international inter-service military exercise, Southern Katipo, last evening.
HMNZS Canterbury and French naval frigate Prairial were joined by HMNZS Wellington, positioned off Oamaru ahead of an anticipated amphibious landing involving US Marines, Royal Marines from the United Kingdom and members of the New Zealand infantry.
A spokesman for the exercise said the place and timing of the troop deployment was classified.
