Minions big hit with children

Kurow's traditional holiday display is attracting plenty of attention from children, this year based on the Minion characters from the popular films. Siblings Ryan (12), Makayla (7) and Tineka (8) Gibbons, of Dunedin, get close to the Minions on Saturday. Photo by David Bruce.
Kurow's Hay family has had to move on, but their replacement is delighting children who visit the Waitaki Valley town these holidays.

Giant round hay bales were used to create the Hay family, which evolved over the years.

Last year that changed when cartoon characters from South Park were introduced and this year another set of characters emerged, three Minion characters from the popular Despicable Me movies.

Information Centre co-ordinator Carron Cossens said children were ''besides themselves with joy'' when they saw the characters at the corner of State Highways 83 and 82.

That was encouraging people to stop in the town and take photographs.

''Like the Hay family, Kurow has to move forward,'' she said.

Janina and Slim Slee and Amber Tyrell and her family volunteered this year to come up with a concept then create and construct it.

The characters will stay until the end of January.
