New Year busiest time for recycling

Christmas and New Year in Oamaru for many people was as much ''out with the old and in with the new'' as it was ''one man's junk is another man's treasure'', if usage of the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park in Oamaru is any indication.

Waitaki Resource Recovery Trust manager Marian Shore said both the recycling centre and the recovery park's second-hand shop had been much busier this Christmas and New Year than in the previous year.

Mrs Shore said before Christmas, the shop had been well patronised.

There had also been an increase in people dropping off items for recycling before Christmas, and another increase immediately after New Year, she said.

''People had a big clean-out, making room for more stuff.

''Just in the last week we had 80cu m from the transfer station, which is pretty big. It's our biggest time of year by a long shot.

''Either people are buying more or they are recycling more, but certainly we are seeing new customers all the time and the volumes are up, certainly on last year.''
