The eastern end of Holmes Wharf in Oamaru will be off-limits to vehicles for the next few weeks, as work to replace worn deck planks (pictured) uncovered rotting support beams.

Waitaki District Council water and wastewater manager Martin Pacey said work to replank a 600sq m section of the 107-year-old wharf began about two weeks ago, but initial work revealed support sections underneath the deck also needed to be repaired.

That meant special tanalised timber, originally intended to be used just for the deck, would also be used for the support beams.

He said the $100,000 project was a ''large extension'' of previous redecking work carried out about two years ago.

A structural engineer had also been employed due to the technical nature of the work, Mr Pacey said.

''We expect to be completed in about five or six weeks.''
