Getting the situation under control

The driver of this effluent truck which fell on its side in McPhersons Rd yesterday afternoon was trapped for about half an hour until electrical contractors had isolated live lines he brought down with a power pole.

Once removed from the truck, the man, in his 50s, was treated for minor injuries by Oamaru St John at the scene of the crash.

About 3.30pm, he was driving the tanker containing pig effluent west on McPhersons Rd. About 100m from the intersection with Ferry Rd, he pulled left as he passed another large vehicle coming the other way.

The effluent truck caught the soft edge of the shingle road, the effluent moving and causing the truck to fall on its side, bringing down a power pole carrying an 11kV line.

Network Waitaki Contracting isolated the line each side of the truck and then pulled free one of the lines which had caught on it.

Effluent leaked from the truck along a drain at the side of the road, then through a culvert into a paddock on the other side.

The truck was later pulled upright and effluent removed.
