Cape to reopen soon

Clear-felling pine trees on Cape Wanbrow is due to finish within the next two weeks, after which the popular Oamaru recreational reserve can reopen to the public again.

The Waitaki District Council decided to fell the trees last year after major storm damage made it too dangerous for people to use.

The 38-year-old forest was due to be felled next year.

With harvesting almost finished, walking tracks and most areas of Cape Wanbrow would open to the public from Anzac Day, council recreation manager Erik van der Spek said.

''Harvesting has taken longer than initially planned, so the council would like to thank the public for its patience.''

A concept plan for replanting the cape has been included in a draft reserve management plan, available from the libraries, service centres, the council or on its website, which is now open for public consultation.

''We encourage the community to take this opportunity to make a submission on the plan and share any thoughts they have on how the cape should be managed for the future,'' he said.

Submissions close at 4pm on June 4.
