Waitaki tourism attractive

National travel and tourism buyers expressed strong interest in Omarama as Tourism Waitaki ''sold'' the district at the 2014 Trenz tourism conference.

Tourism Waitaki was among 300 exhibitors from around the country showing their product to more than 260 international travel and tourism buyers in Auckland last month.

Tourism Waitaki representatives Megan Howell, Kelly Currie and Jason Menard spent two and a-half days each meeting 50 international travel trade agents.

Meetings also included international media to showcase Waitaki people and products to a global audience.

In 15-minute business-focused appointments, they updated old connections and informed new ones of Oamaru and the Waitaki District offerings.

''As always, people are so excited with what Waitaki has to offer,'' Mrs Howell said.

German agents had expressed particular interest in Omarama's gliding opportunities.

Information on salmon fishing at Omarama's Ladybird Hill and the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail was also popular.

''You can see so many different attractions and I think that's what blows people away,'' she said.

''It's about getting off the beaten track and experiencing the real New Zealand.''

While direct results of meetings at Trenz were unlikely to be seen for 12 to 18 months, Mrs Howell said it was ''absolutely successful'' for the district.
