Arts, culture and heritage play an essential role in defining Oamaru's unique identity and artist Philina den Dulk says the creative community has inspired her to really pursue a career with her art and share her passion with others.

The den Dulk family - children Jayekib, Arie, Iyzach and Knoah, as well as Russell den Dulk and Mrs den Dulk, moved to Oamaru three years ago.

Originally from Invercargill, Mrs den Dulk has moved around a lot but now calls the North Otago town home.

''We've lived in Auckland and Dunedin and by the beach, but I said to my husband, `Oamaru's a place we'll be forever','' she said.

Mrs den Dulk, who also manages Steampunk HQ part-time, has been selected to exhibit her work at the forthcoming Christchurch Art Show.

Three signature pieces led to her selection to show at the four-day exhibition at the Wigram Air Force Museum from June 19 to 22.

She said she was looking forward to networking with other artists, learning new techniques and gaining inspired at the South Island's new premier annual art sales event.

She has been painting since 2004, when she picked up brushes for the first time since studying art at high school. Her work has since been exhibited in galleries throughout New Zealand, and overseas.

The self-taught artist works mostly in acrylics and loves to use various textures in exploring the use of visual language.

Her signature work incorporates poppies - something everyone associated something with, she said.

''That's what I've been doing forever and that's what people know me for,'' she said.

Inspiration for her artwork came from her nearest and dearest, the love she had for family and friends, she said.

She dreamed of one day having her own gallery space in Oamaru, but said she was yet to find ''that perfect space''.
