Up to 90 film crew, cast and extras will today continue filming, in Oamaru's historic area, a Japanese production about the man who brought the 1964 Olympic Games to Tokyo.

The crew started filming in Oamaru yesterday, after two days in Central Otago at Cromwell and Poolburn.

They will continue to use what one of the film crew described as ''an amazing open set'' until Friday, before shifting to Christchurch.

Yesterday, about 80 were involved in filming scenes, including a Los Angeles fruit and vegetable market, Farmer Fred, created in Tyne St using the old coal depot.

About 15 local people were involved as extras, including driving locally sourced cars with California number plates.

A bonus was the distribution last night of fruit and vegetables bought for the market, with an approach being made to the Oamaru foodbank to take the produce.

Oamaru's historic area, from Tees St to the back of Harbour St, is being used to represent scenes for Venezuela, Mexico and Peru.

The film is being partly made to promote the 2020 Olympic Games, which return to the Japanese capital.

A Stone's Throw Productions film production co-ordinator/casting, Maddy Maxwell, said the biggest day for the crew and cast would be today. Harbour St will be closed at times to shoot scenes.

Local people had been keen to be involved, she said.

About 30 production crew from Japan had teamed up with New Zealand crews and extras for the production in Oamaru.
